3rd Indonesia Circular Economy Forum (ICEF) 2019

Published on 3 December 2019

EuroCham was invited to the 3rd Indonesia Circular Economy (ICEF) 2019 on Monday, 11 October 2019. During the event, a parallel discussion session was held by Packaging and Recycling Association for Indonesia Sustainable Environment / Association for Sustainable Packaging & Recycling for Indonesia (PRAISE) with the theme of "Accelerating Circular Economy in Post-Consumer Packaging - A Call to Action for Cross Sectoral Partnership."

The discussion highlighted that post consumption packaging has an important role in the circular economy. In Indonesia, the challenges of managing post-consumption packaging begin with the collection and sorting / segregation in households. While the growth of infrastructure and the recycling industry is not commensurate with the growth in consumption and economic development. So that cooperation is needed from all parties in the Extended Stakeholder Responsibility: community, industry and government to collaborate in processing post-consumption packaging.

One of the post-consumption packaging management models proposed by PRAISE is the PRO (Packaging Recovery Organization). "The PRO model will enable the industry (consumer goods) with other sectors to join the coalition, build sustainable cooperation with the recycling industry involving the informal sector, be facilitated and guided by the government, so that a circular economy can be formed in the management of post-consumption packaging. The PRO concept has been successfully carried out in several countries, including Europe, Mexico and South Africa. These countries are able to connect value chains in circular economies effectively.

The initiative of the PRO concept by PRAISE, which is a combination of six companies namely Coca-Cola Indonesia, Danone Indonesia, PT Indofood Sukses Makmur Tbk, PT Nestle Indonesia, Tetra Pak, and PT Unilever Indonesia Tbk, shows that the industrial sector also has the same commitments with the government in handling and reducing waste in Indonesia through a circular economy. However, collaboration between all parties is needed so that the circular economy can run well so that it can be a catalyst for changes in the economic, social and environmental aspects.
